Located in Birmingham, Jefferson County, the Birmingham Black Radio Museum (BBRM) is an award-winning community museum and archives dedicated to collecting, preserving, and presenting the history of Black radio in Alabama. Black radio stations had personalities who were larger than life and served a crucial role in shaping their community, even during the height of the civil rights movement.
The Birmingham Black Radio Museum provides a hands-on, immersive experience where guests can explore, interact, and learn about the rich history of Black Radio in Birmingham. The “Great Moments, Frequencies and Stations” area combines striking graphics integrated with photos, newspaper articles and a digital media touchscreen element that allows guests to interact with the exhibit via a trivia game. The “Voices of the Community” area of the museum allows visitors to sit inside a recording booth, complete with on air sign and microphone. Its an interactive experience few ever get to have and serves as an opportunity for guests to provide feedback or messages.

This museum also houses physical material, such as advertisements, ticket stubs, posters, photographs, event programs, news clippings, radio logs and other memorabilia that represent that era. Funding comes from federal and state agencies, local governments and foundations, as well as individual donors from across the country. The hope is that each visitor of this museum leaves with more appreciation for the radio personalities that have paved the way forfuture generations.
