JA McWane Economic Education Center
Birmingham, Alabama
We had the incredible opportunity to help bring the new JA McWane Economic Education Center to life right in central Alabama. Located at 2201 6th Ave North, in a spot that used to be just a flat surface parking lot, Junior Achievement of Alabama has built a state-of-the-art facility where middle and high school students can dive headfirst into adulting. After wrapping up 12 hours of classroom prep, kids step into this immersive space to simulate running a real city, managing budgets, paying bills, and figuring out what they want to be when they grow up. It’s the kind of hands-on learning that completely flips a student’s perspective on money and career paths, and we were thrilled to design a key piece of that puzzle.
Our specific mission was to partner with the United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) to design an engaging, age-appropriate space within the center. The challenge? Take a compact, high-traffic footprint and transform it into a tactile environment that explains big concepts like philanthropy, community crisis management, and nonprofit careers. We wanted to make sure these kids didn’t just see United Way as a logo, but actually understood how UWCA steps up during tough times, like natural disasters or economic hardships, and how they, as the next generation, can step up too.
