JA McWane Economic Education Center

Birmingham, Alabama

We had the incredible opportunity to help bring the new JA McWane Economic Education Center to life right in central Alabama. Located at 2201 6th Ave North, in a spot that used to be just a flat surface parking lot, Junior Achievement of Alabama has built a state-of-the-art facility where middle and high school students can dive headfirst into adulting. After wrapping up 12 hours of classroom prep, kids step into this immersive space to simulate running a real city, managing budgets, paying bills, and figuring out what they want to be when they grow up. It’s the kind of hands-on learning that completely flips a student’s perspective on money and career paths, and we were thrilled to design a key piece of that puzzle.

Our specific mission was to partner with the United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) to design an engaging, age-appropriate space within the center. The challenge? Take a compact, high-traffic footprint and transform it into a tactile environment that explains big concepts like philanthropy, community crisis management, and nonprofit careers. We wanted to make sure these kids didn’t just see United Way as a logo, but actually understood how UWCA steps up during tough times, like natural disasters or economic hardships, and how they, as the next generation, can step up too.

To do this, we designed three distinct, interactive walls that are also digitally linked to web pages. We kicked things off with Wall 1: UWCA 101, giving students a foundational look at the organization’s mission. Next up was Wall 2: Simulation Activities, where students get to interactively solve community problems. Finally, Wall 3: Volunteer highlights leadership organizations and pathways to give back. To tie the whole sensory experience together, we integrated a sleek 2-to-5-minute looping video that dives into UWCA’s history and partner programs, handing off the final design files and deep specs to ensure the space functions flawlessly. At Method-1, our philosophy is that a truly great environment takes a story off the paper and turns it into a physical experience you want to interact with over and over. We approach every project by looking at the space, figuring out what’s possible, and designing with two main goals in mind: it has to be interpretive so every type of learner gets the message, and it has to be sustainable so it lives and breathes with minimal maintenance. We love how this space turned out, and we love knowing it’s inspiring Central Alabama’s future philanthropists and leaders every single day.
